Sauna is a Finn's place for ultimate relaxation. It is a strong symbol of Finland and has been a habit for us for hundreds of centuries.
One of the biggest reasons why sauna is a part of our everyday life are the numerous health benefits we get from it. For example, the heath of the sauna makes your blood move faster in your blood vessels. The same happens if you are for example exercising. That's why we suggest that you don't go to sauna if you have a fever. If you have a severe heart condition, it's good to talk to your doctor before entering to sauna.
In Finland's mythology, our community believed in elves and leprechauns whom the land belonged to. People believed that behaving well in the elf's land would gain the trust of them. When one had gotten the trust, the elves would protect not only the land but the people living on it from all the bad. Every sauna also had its own elf and its spirit that rose from the hot stones of the sauna stove. This spirit was called “löylyn henki”, the spirit of the water.
It was a habit to greet the "löyly spirit" before entering sauna. If one didn't behave well during sauna, the sauna elf would get angry and decided to no longer protect the residents in the area. It was not in an elf's favor to go to the sauna during night time, because that was the time reserved for the elves and spirits to enjoy the sauna.
Nowadays “löyly” is what we Finns call the water that is thrown onto the hot stones in sauna. Because of the mythology, sauna is still a place for quietness and relaxing.
